Awards

Rugby Archers are keen to encourage members to develop their archery skills, so, for the outdoor season, we have adopted both the 252 Awards Scheme and the Archery GB Progress Awards, plus we have implemented our own Six Gold End badge. We also have a Portsmouth Improvement Scheme, which we will implement during the 2023/2024 indoor season for the first time.

All badge schemes are designed to help archers practice their shooting at different distances and reward their achievements. It is supposed to be a fun way for archers to test their skills and gain confidence in their abilities.

252 Awards Scheme – Outdoors

At Rugby Archers, the only way to progress to distances further than 20m outdoors is via the 252 Awards Scheme, but it’s completely optional. The club appreciates that not everyone wants to be the next Olympic champion, and that some people just enjoy coming to the club and shooting their bow. Those people are just as welcome as any other member.

This scheme is for new archers (and not so new) who wish to progress through the distances during the outdoor season. It helps to prevent people from jumping up to distances they’re not comfortable with or experienced at. Once you have been shooting at the club for a month, you can start working towards your first badge.

There is no cost to the archer to take part in the 252 Awards Scheme as all costs are covered by the club.

Please direct all questions regarding the scheme to our Records Officer.

How it works

The aim is to get a two consecutive rounds with a score of 252 or better (adjusted for traditional and barebow – see table below) using 36 arrows.

All rounds are shot outdoors on a 122cm face. Each round is scored using the five-zone scoring method: Gold = 9, Red = 7, Blue = 5, Black = 3, White = 1.

After 6 practice shots (sighters), 36 arrows are shot in ends of 6. The maximum score for 36 arrows using the five-zone scoring is 324. Archers start at 20m and once they have achieved scores of 252 in two rounds for each distance, they can progress up the distances: 30m, 40m, 50m and 60m.

Scores are submitted via the Archers Toolbox app, and once they have been verified by our Records Officer, badges for each distance are awarded to commemorate the achievement. Awards must be claimed in consecutive distances. The scheme does go up to 100 m, but at Rugby Archers we cap our distances at 60 m due to the length of our shooting field. We are proud to have members shooting all available distances.

There are no changes in the scores for different age groups, only bowstyle.

Three Gold End – Outdoors

This award is designed to celebrate accuracy for traditional archers during the outdoor season. The pin is awarded when 3 arrows are scored as a gold in a single end.

Unlike the Six Gold End above, the pin is the same for each distance. The distance you hold it for will recorded on the Club Awards page.

To claim a badge the archer should first contact the Records Officer, as the club has a small stock of Indoor and Outdoor Progress Awards badges. If we have run out then archers will need to email a form, along with an accompanying cheque or bank transfer for £3, to Archery GB. More details can be found on the Archery GB page.
