Indoor season change of venue and shooting times

We’re pleased to let you know that, from Sunday 5 November 2023, we’ll be shooting at the Thornfield Indoor Bowls Club, near the leisure centre. We have emailed all the members with the details of the new venue. so please read this email carefully and if you have any questions, please ask any member of the committee. Please note the safety and housekeeping details within that email.

There will be no shooting on Sunday 29 October as we need to move all the equipment over to the new venue.

In a slight change to last season, we will be shooting indoors twice a week, on Thursdays from 6-8pm and on Sundays from 12-3pm.

Our first session at the new venue will be on Sunday 5 November. ClubEvent will be back up and running by then, so please do book your sessions as normal.

Due to the venue’s prior commitments/holidays, there are going to be a couple of dates where we cannot shoot. A reminder will be added on ClubEvent, but for your records, there will be no shooting on the following days:

  • Sunday 12 November
  • Thursday 30 November

Over 150 people tried archery with Rugby Archers!

Last Saturday, we welcomed over 150 members of the public to shoot with us as part of Archery GB‘s Start Archery Week, an annual event created to open archery clubs up to the public.

It was our first-ever Start Archery event and large-scale have-a-go, and we weren’t sure what to expect but people came down to Harris Academy on mass. For over four hours, people of all ages were given the chance to try their hand at archery, with members supporting them throughout the event.

We also opened booking for three of our summer beginners’ courses, and sold all of them out in less than two hours – beating our previous record of 25 hours by a huge margin.

With balloons, card games and cookies, the day was a great success, but the crowning glory was the Β£170 we raised for Macmillan Cancer Support.

Thank you to everyone who came and supported us on the day.

Feb 23 – Archers take the pot at “Poker Night” fun shoot!

Cards on the table – this fun shoot was much harder than the previous one’s we’ve had this season. From 18 metres, members had to score 21 (or less) by shooting at regular sized playing cards using between 2-4 arrows. Score over 21 and they busted, under and the points started decreasing.

However, as they always do, our members took on the challenge admirably and 4 people across the two sessions emerged victorious. Congratulations to Steve (Barebow), Tom (Recurve), Barbara (Barebow) and Louis (Recurve). Don’t spend your chocolate coins too fast!

Jan 23 – Members attend first competition and are victorious!

(L-R) Shona, Alan, Suzanne, Mark, Richard and Steve S

Six members of Rugby Archers made a weekend of it by taking part in two separate competitions and coming home with a handful of bling.

All six archers went along to the Long Buckby Archery Club Indoor Portsmouth Tournament to take part in their very first competition. After battling against 30+ other archers, Mark took home silver in the Men’s Barebow Single and gold in the Double. Richard took a bronze in both the Men’s Barebow Single and Double, and Shona walked away with the silver Women’s Barebow Single.

Sunday was spent with other Warwickshire clubs at the County of Warwick Archery Association Indoor Senior Championships in Walsall. This time, Shona was awarded “the golden quiver” for 1st place in the Women’s Barebow across all clubs under the CWAA, and Alan received the Most Improved Men’s Handicap award across all bowtypes, which is an amazing award to win on just your second ever competition!

Congratulations to all our archers who took part. Medals aside, they had a great time and learned a lot. And, all have signed up for another competition in March, so they must have enjoyed it!
