New archery beginner’s course dates for 2024!

Just in time for those last-minute Christmas gifts, we’re announcing our new batch of archery beginners courses for Spring 2024.

We’re delighted to announce that we are ready to accept bookings for the first three of our beginners courses in 2024.

Other than knowing your left from your right there is absolutely no experience required to take a beginner’s course. Unless you are an experienced archer, taking one of our courses is the only way to become a shooting member.

The course costs £60 per junior (under 18) and £70 per senior and is made up of three two-hour sessions held on Sundays. Details for each available session are detailed below. Under 18s must be accompanied by a guardian to all sessions. There are no exceptions to this.

The dates are as follows:

Course 1:
January 14, 10am to 12pm
January 21, 10am to 12pm
January 28, 10am to 12pm

Course 2:
February 4, 10am to 12pm
February 11, 10am to 12pm
February 18, 10am to 12pm

Course 3:
February 25, 10am to 12pm
March 3, 10am to 12pm
March 17, 10am to 12pm

All payment information is at the link for each course.

All sessions will be held at Thornfield Indoor Bowls Club in Rugby. Places are limited to 8 attendees and are allocated on a first-come, first-served basis.

For more information about the courses, booking and payments, please see our Courses page.

Over 150 people tried archery with Rugby Archers!

Last Saturday, we welcomed over 150 members of the public to shoot with us as part of Archery GB‘s Start Archery Week, an annual event created to open archery clubs up to the public.

It was our first-ever Start Archery event and large-scale have-a-go, and we weren’t sure what to expect but people came down to Harris Academy on mass. For over four hours, people of all ages were given the chance to try their hand at archery, with members supporting them throughout the event.

We also opened booking for three of our summer beginners’ courses, and sold all of them out in less than two hours – beating our previous record of 25 hours by a huge margin.

With balloons, card games and cookies, the day was a great success, but the crowning glory was the £170 we raised for Macmillan Cancer Support.

Thank you to everyone who came and supported us on the day.

*If there is any doubt in your mind that your child will be able to pull a bow, please do not book as places are non-refundable. Instead, contact us via email and we will arrange a date for your child to come and test out our bows. If all goes well, you can always book them onto a course in the summer.

All sessions will be held on the field at Harris Academy. Please use the larger car park at the back of the school by the fields (CV22 6EA). Please be aware that on Sundays there are church groups also using this car park – drive slowly.

When booking, please fill out all the details before you pay. To do so, click on “Get a ticket” at the top of the page and click through, adding the details as you go.

Once you have filled out your details, please pay within 3 days to secure your place. After 3 days, if you have not paid we will release your space for someone else to book.

We currently only accept payment through bank transfer. All the payment details are listed on the ClubEvent page. Please use your name as a reference.

Because the course is in April, we are beholden to the weather. Please bring a waterproof jacket and shoes. If the rain is too heavy, we will have to call off the session and reschedule. We’ll let you know about this via email/text as soon as we can. If it’s sunny, don’t forget your sunscreen, hat and drink!

If you have any questions, please contact us at secretary@rugbyarchers.co.uk.

Feb 23 – Archers take the pot at “Poker Night” fun shoot!

Cards on the table – this fun shoot was much harder than the previous one’s we’ve had this season. From 18 metres, members had to score 21 (or less) by shooting at regular sized playing cards using between 2-4 arrows. Score over 21 and they busted, under and the points started decreasing.

However, as they always do, our members took on the challenge admirably and 4 people across the two sessions emerged victorious. Congratulations to Steve (Barebow), Tom (Recurve), Barbara (Barebow) and Louis (Recurve). Don’t spend your chocolate coins too fast!

Jan 23 – Members attend first competition and are victorious!

(L-R) Shona, Alan, Suzanne, Mark, Richard and Steve S

Six members of Rugby Archers made a weekend of it by taking part in two separate competitions and coming home with a handful of bling.

All six archers went along to the Long Buckby Archery Club Indoor Portsmouth Tournament to take part in their very first competition. After battling against 30+ other archers, Mark took home silver in the Men’s Barebow Single and gold in the Double. Richard took a bronze in both the Men’s Barebow Single and Double, and Shona walked away with the silver Women’s Barebow Single.

Sunday was spent with other Warwickshire clubs at the County of Warwick Archery Association Indoor Senior Championships in Walsall. This time, Shona was awarded “the golden quiver” for 1st place in the Women’s Barebow across all clubs under the CWAA, and Alan received the Most Improved Men’s Handicap award across all bowtypes, which is an amazing award to win on just your second ever competition!

Congratulations to all our archers who took part. Medals aside, they had a great time and learned a lot. And, all have signed up for another competition in March, so they must have enjoyed it!
